Why Kayak in Baja, Mexico
I find that the older I get, the more I enjoy warm weather. As a kid I spent tons of time out in the snow building forts, sledding, skiing and launching snowballs at my siblings, but now my idea of a good time is a generous amount of sun and some fresh air. Add some water to that list, and you’ve got a great combination. After all, even sun can be overbearing if you don’t have a way to cool off.
I was lucky enough to go to Thailand on my honeymoon and during the trip I went kayaking and snorkeling for the first time in my life. The tropical waters of southern Thailand were warm and clear and it felt good to glide through the water in my own little kayak. Unfortunately, a trip to Thailand took twenty hours or more of travel time.
Now that I’m working a full-time job, I’m not willing to spend a whole day of vacation time just to get where I’m going - especially when it is possible to kayak in any number of beautiful places. There are rivers, lakes and oceans all over the world to choose from but, as I mentioned earlier, I am a fan of warm weather and warm water.
Having grown up in Maine, I know how different the water in New England can be from the water in warmer places like Baja, Mexico. One is not only warmer, but clearer. Personally, I like to be able to see more than a foot or two into the water around me. When I researched Baja, I learned that there are a lot of different things to do in the area. On a single kayaking trip visitors can camp, explore caves, snorkel, swim and visit a bunch of different beaches. It sounds like a lot of fun and Baja, Mexico is a lot closer to home than Thailand. So the next time I head off on a tropical vacation, I may look into scheduling a Baja kayaking trip.
